What do you currently do for a living, how well does it pay and are you hoping it to lead to something greater? Did you need any qualifications? What’s your typical day?

If you’re young and not working, what are you studying and hoping to become? What will be your steps after school?

I am interested to see where everyone is at the moment in their lives as I assume most of us are fully fledged adults now! Tell me your success!

I currently work for the government in helping administer one of the tax streams. Give another week, I have been in the role for one year. I have been encouraged to apply for a higher level due to my potential I’ve showcased and the responsibilities I have recently taken on. The role I’m in involves working closely with clients by phone and email, processing tasks for clients, raising assessments, making decisions or using my discretion based on legislation. However my recent work has been project related where I have been reviewing other officers’ work, providing feedback and educating them. Last week I held an upskilling session for six people (in person). Legit what my dreams are made of - a conference room with windows looking over the city. I am currently on over $60,000 in salary. I can’t give an exact amount as we tend to do a bit of overtime, and our pay increases over time for our experience.

Before this role I temporarily worked in another government organisation in their administration team. I was assigned to recruitment and training. It was only for a few weeks but I achieved my goals quickly. Reorganised their files and updated templates and stuff accordingly. Worked on data transformation as my boss was not very good with technology. Worked with other departments to develop a new guide for officers being deployed and needing to record that. Took calls and answered enquired from applicants about jobs. Organised their applications and let them know their progress through the recruitment stages (put a tool together for my team to be able to easily visualise the progress of applicants).

Just before that job I graduated from my university after 3 years of study (class of 2019 before covid, so I had a normal graduation yay). Bachelor of Commerce with two majors. I worked in retail through my whole degree. In the last year of my degree I was a research assistant to a previous uni professor. I worked with high volumes of client data for analysis. The focus was agriculture in the rural part of my state. Very interesting. Learnt heaps about Excel lol (mostly self taught).

I have a career ambition of becoming a forensic accountant one day..investigating financial crimes. For now though it’s just gaining experience, skills and knowledge :)

I can’t wait to hear what you guys have been up to or what you’re planning on doing for your careers :)

    It goes like this:
    1/2pm - Wake up
2 - 2:15pm - Get ready and get on PC
12:00am - Turn it off and go to bed
4am - Go to sleep and repeat

Then from 2:15pm I just stay on my PC all day (because lockdown and strict home rules).

I do a variety of things though:
    - Write songs/English translations (or more recently, writing songs in Japanese)
    - Study Japanese on Duolingo (the time depends, some days I only feel like doing a few lessons or maybe a few hours, or some days, not at all)
    - Recording covers and then editing them
    - Hop on the server for a few minutes (or longer)
    - Browse around on here
    - Talk to others
    - Watch anime
    - Do some editing on CapCut (I will do a thread on this sometime)
    - Listen to music (mostly depressing ones)
    - Drawing (and then cry on how bad it is :))

First of all, you've landed well. If I take the person I knew from years ago then I wouldn't expect you to turn out like this. Keep it up

For me, I am working in a company that is labeled as forest management but that's a small part.
We are part of a non profit organization that strives to keep nature in our country and to protect it. It has many people who loyally follow it and donate to help us reach a set goal to buy land to make it ours and protect it from being turned into a distribution center or being destroyed all together.

We are a company that isn't supported by the donations and we make our own money by taking on jobs. And we can finally say that we are making big profits each year that we can invest in our team, machines and even donate to the organization to buy more land.

For me a day is like this, I am a Junior employee meaning that I am a helping hand (usually) to one of our Senior employees. The Senior is the manager of the task and Juniors assist him in completing it. I get sent out alone at times or with a new guy meaning I have to fill the role of a Senior.
I start the day by going to the schedule and looking at what my job will be for the day or the week, then I figure out who I am with and who the Senior is. I ask the Senior what we need and start preparing so that we can leave as quickly and smoothly as possible. Preparing usually means, grabbing machines or tools doing quick maintenance. Or driving a tractor or another machine up on the trailer and strapping it down so it's safe to transport.

Then we go to the job location, do a quick walk around and depending on the job you will either know what you need to do or be told what to do and make sure everyone that is with you has a job to do and does it safely. Using the right protective gear etc.
My last three weeks consisted of putting up fences, a farmer who uses a piece of our ground requested new fences because they were falling apart so it was our responsibility to put them up. Me and my co-worker ordered new fences, picked up wood and supplies and built new ones and replaced the broken ones.
This is kind of dull since at some point you start dreaming and breathing fences, but more often than not my job is very varied and I do a lot of different things throughout the week.

With this job also comes a study, every Friday for me is a school day and we spent the last three Fridays on practicing to cutting down trees.
Which is something I haven't really done before meaning my task would have been cleaning up after the people who were allowed to cut down a tree. BUT, I lied and said I had more experience then I actually have meaning they let me cut down trees to. And allow me to brag here, I am doing very well and even though I lied I received compliments and was allowed today to help someone completely new to cut down his first tree. I will come clean some day but for now I will keep the lie up :^)

But yeah, that's around what my day or weeks looks like. Just going out to do work in nature, that might consist of putting down tradition Dutch fences, mowing kilometers of grass, removing sick plants, going around in a boat to pick up trash in the water etc etc

It's a fun and cool job, I get to combine my passion for nature and machines. I get to drive big ass tractors and odd machines, and I get to enter protected nature areas that a lot of people will never be able to enter. I also meet a lot of passionate and intelligent people who fight for the well being of nature until the day they die. A good example is the farmer who asked for new fences, he lives on the farm for 12 years now but has lived in the village since his first day. He saw how nature changed and what impact certain government projects had, from a young age he studied and fought for the well being of the fields and is a book of knowledge. He's in a constant battle against young people who've learned from a book about the fields but haven't even been in the field.

I can keep going but yeah, it's about that.

awww thanks for your compliment and same to you, looks like you are a hard worker too. When you guys go to a job and do your observation, is the location studied to ensure that not too many trees are cut down? I would imagine this would be part of your studies, right? Like looking at the impact to wildlife, etc. Really amazing stuff. I wonder what kind of trees we talking too and how tall. Has there been a time on the job where things didn’t go to plan? Like one tree was to be cut down but it hit down others. And for the land you fence, how big we talking? Thank you for detailing your work it’s really interesting :)

Yes, new locations are studied and we are always mindful of nature. Some exceptions, if a healthy tree makes a dangerous situation it will have to go. But we plant 10 new trees for the healthy one we take down so it's not too bad. And it's part of my study, for our course for trees in streets we are taught to look at the tree first before deciding what branches have to go, and you're only allowed to cut 30% away which could be just 2 branches. You also learn a special way to cut them to avoid the tree being damaged more than it has to and in which season to cut them for their best recovery.

We also recently started focusing on wild life, we don't have amazing wild life like you have but we do keep an eye out for the insects and small wild life. For example, we are constantly discussing with customers if we can leave a patch of grass so that small animals and insects still have something to hide and chill in instead of cutting down the entire field. It's an old concept but never really used, so we are really pushing it everywhere we can to normalize it.

In my opinion the trees I handle are on the tiny bit below average size. (There's jokes to be made here but I will leave that to you)
I'm still learning so I don't touch trees that I don't feel comfortable with, mainly because it's a job that if it goes wrong you can get hurt or killed so I am taking moderate steps.
The biggest one I cut was 40 cm (15 inch?) in width and if I had to guess around 20 meters (65 feet?) in size. I never kept track of the sizes but I'll do that next time. While typing this I am exporting a video me cutting down a tree, idk what I can fit in this post but I will put some snapshots of it in.

And luckily for me I haven't had a tree that fell wrong in a bad way, we're currently practicing in a old test forest where we have to cut down a specific type of tree because there's a sickness going around. We're actually against doing this, we say let all the weak trees fall over and die out and the ones that survive will bring a new breed of more resistant trees. But that's another talk.
The only mistakes I made was making a cut wrong, unlike my co-workers who have destroyed fences or lamppost which weren't part of the plan.
The most recent mistake was a co-worker who's very experienced cut down a tree, but the tree made a sudden rotation and landed perfectly between a tree that (this is hard to explain kek) split up from the stump into 4 branches that were all like full grown trees itself. So a pretty rare tree, but it fell perfectly in the middle of that meaning it was stuck and damaged the other tree.

I edited into a shitty video with windows movie maker, you see me (yellow helmet) and a instructor talking about how I am going to cut it etc.
He helps me out here because I messed my first tree of the day up badly and wanted him to guide me through, this tree was extra tricky because it was leaning the opposite direction of where I wanted it to fall. Meaning we had to spend a lot of time hammering in the wedges.
Then after that my co-worker came in to brute force the tree over, even though that is not really allowed since it takes 20 years of your backs life every time you do that.
The mayor mistake I made there was that I got too excited and started pushing against the tree with him, which you're not allowed to do and is dangerous. The cut I made was good and it went where I wanted it to go.

Mentions : First slowdown I say ''I can sleep under this tonight without any doubts'' because of how unwilling it was to move.
When I accidently hammer the tree I say ''Goddammit'' and call the tree a prostitute.
When it fell it took down three other sick trees, so 3 for 1 combo. And my co-worker celebrates his primal strength.
Also you can see overtime that the tree comes more up straight as we hammer it. I also put the chainsaw to close to the tree, and almost got it crushed. I wrote this part in a hurry so sorry if it's messy.

I just share the beliefs that my company is trying to push out, at first I had trouble doing that because I didn't understand the bigger effect it had.
But now that I see it, I can support it fully and am proud of what I do.

And that picture you put is not me, that's my co-worker.
If you put it as a funny face, yeah it's epic he's a great guy

tbh I have no clue as to what I want to do with my life in the long run. I'm currently a first year college student majoring in English

my typical day isn't rlly all that special, lol. I work on the weekends (in the back of a big grocery store) in the early afternoon until the late evening (just got home from work an hour ago, actually lol) but as for monday through friday, I usually have 2-3 classes ranging from 50 min to 3 hours depending on what class it is each day. I'm taking 5 classes in total, currently. Fridays in particular I usually reserve for cleaning up a lil bit around the house and getting some school work done ahead of time so I'm not procrastinating until the last minute. Nowadays, for entertainment, I'm mostly watching Youtube and a little bit of Twitch - I'm on and off following the current events unfolding on the Dream SMP but many times miss some streams/content because there's just no way for me to safely and healthily take in every stream/video that takes place in a regular day. Aside from that, I'm currently reading a rlly long fanfic and in about two and a half weeks, my nights will be occupied mostly watching my favorite baseball team. I've also been listening to a ton of music - mostly elton john stuff, who I'm obsessed with. Every now and then I convene with some old friends from HS but these get-togethers have become rarer nowadays because we're all hella busy with our own stuff

I've also been trying to eat somewhat better and exercise a lil bit more - I made the decision back in early February, probably around a month ago at this point, after being fed up with how far I've let myself go in terms of my health and weight. For practically the entire pandemic I've been hovering around the 220-225 pound mark, and now about a month since I've pledged to try to better myself, I'm weighing in around 216-217 pounds. My goal is to one day be below the 200 mark, which I haven't been since freshman year of HS at the latest

Thanks for your submission. I hear a lot of people from outside my country talk about their college/university in terms of majors...and it’s most commonly English. Here we declare a degree and then come the majors. So majoring in English - where does that lead? Are you undeclared for your degree? I would guess being a writer, teacher off the top of my head. It’s just very loosely used in conversation but I don’t actually know what that means in terms of what they specialise in. In my perspective English could be so many things as English is in everything we do. It’s like someone saying they major in mathematics. all science involves that it could lead to engineering or being a pharmacist...so sorry to go off topic I’m just really curious what is implied when someone leads with what they major in.

I'm honestly not so aware. I majored in English mainly because I'm a big fan of journalism and writing in general, I like to read things that interest me and literature IMO is rlly interesting. At this stage in my 2nd semester as a freshman (1st year), I'm not sure where I want to take it. I may or not finish as an English major, or something else. I didn't put much thought into it when I made the initial choice - just knew I was pretty good with English/Language Arts classes in HS, more than any of the other major subjects. There was a point tho where my goal in life rlly was to one day become a sports journalist but with the pandemic happening as it did, I'm now more-so 50/50 on that
