Promise me we won’t go to sleep with this poison on our lipsLet’s take a breath while there’s something leftAnd there’s love left to give Let’s don’t let our last words be the bad wordsWe know we’ll still hurt tomorrowWe can’t let this cruel wall be our downfallA prideful pill we can’t swallow You know me well enough to tear the soul right out of meAnd I know how to turn you inside out so please before we speak Leave it all unsaid, leave this war outside our bedLay down our heads and dream instead Oh yeah... Meh. I was HOPING it was something coding related. BUT... It's a song. Meh.
Graded Essay: In his inaugural address, John F. Kennedy uses figurative language such as metaphors and personification to make the points he makes more clear and interesting. This figurative language also gives extra meaning to his speech as well. Personification is one of the major types of figurative language Kennedy uses. One example of personification is when he says that the new generation of Americans was "born in this century, tempered by way, disciplined by a hard and bitter piece" (13). This personification explains recent American history in an interesting way. Another example is when he says "those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside" (34), demonstrating that if groups of people simply follow typical beliefs will end up accomplishing nothing. Metaphors are just as common as personification in this inaugural address. For example, he says that "only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger" (87). This means that few people were able to defend themselves when they need it most. Later he says that "the energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it-and the glow from that fire can truly light the world" (91), which is an excellent example of metaphors. This means that if we all help our country, we can improve the entire world. In conclusion, in his inaugural address, John F. Kennedy uses outstanding figurative language to create an inspiring and impressive speech. Teacher Comment: Your commentary does not explain how the quote is an example of personification? What inanimate object is given human qualities in the words quoted? Something for school
