Tips & Tricks
In the options menu, under Gameplay, there is the option to turn on on-screen damage gauge, a feature present in the Borderlands series. The option shows the numerical amount of damage the player deals and shows whether the damage is critical or not (headshots, weakspots).

A cheap way to get past difficult firefights is to run past them. Not all areas require Booker to defeat every enemy.

Spam invincibility by using the Gear "Winter Shield" in any areas with Sky-Lines.

If the player finds a gear but wants a different one, restart a checkpoint and return to the spot where that gear was located. A new gear will spawn in its place.

Survival
Survival is obviously key among all else in this playthrough. Some basic things to keep you alive in this mode are:

• Conserve your money - Constantly assess what is neccessary to buy. When it comes to purchasing vigors or weapon upgrades, only upgrade the vigors you mainly use (same goes for weapons).
• Use Possession on vending machines - It can drop around 10 Silver Eagles for the player on 1999 (see Unlimited Money and Lock Pickspage for a neat exploit).
• Search everything - With limited resources, search every crack and crevice for random piles of health packs, salts, ammo, and lockpicks.
• Avoid conflict - Not all situations have to end up in firefights. Avoid killing innocent NPCs, stealing from NPCs, and sneak past the Boys of Silence. Don't start a riot unless the reward is higher than the risk.
• But be mindful of what you pick up - Beware of rotten apples, cigarettes and alchohol. Some items may add health but reduce salts (and vice versa).
• Abuse your checkpoints - When a player dies, he will lose 100 Silver Eagles. Constantly assess whether a battle is worth restarting rather than continuing. If the player wants a different Gear, restart a checkpoint and return to the spot where that gear was first present. In its place will be a new gear.
• Find as many Infusions as possible - This may get a tad annoying, due backtracking areas for the optional missions that reward them, but it will be worth it in the long run.
• Upgrade Shield first, then Salts - Upgrade Shield first, as it constantly regenerates (can be sped up with proper Gears).

Combat
Enemies are relentless on this difficuly, they will seek you out at any chance they get. Here's some help to not get mauled repeatedly.

• No shame in hiding - When enemies are on the lookout for you, use walls to your advantage and stay out of sight until you're ready.
• Lure enemies to you - Seperate enemies from their group and lure them to an empty areas. You can start taking them out one by one, a very useful tactic against encounters with mutiple Heavy Hitters.
• Set up traps - During a big fight try to set up traps for the enemies to step in. While they might not do much damage, these traps prove helpful in slowing down enemies in general.
• Aim for critical spots - Hitting critical spots on enemies provides the most damage. The general human fodder's critical spots are their heads, the Siren's is her head, the Handymen's are their hearts, and The Patriots' are the gears on their back.
• Try to possess the turrets - Turrets can see where the player can't and can do some damage before being destroyed (though they are better suited as distractions on 1999). Also, enemies can destroy the turrets before Possession runs out and they turn back against the player.

Vigors
Vigors are your life support. Without proper utilization of vigors, you are just asking to get stomped. Here's a bit on how to avoid all that.

• Don't skip the first Possession upgrade - Possession Aid, not "Possession for Less". It grants the ability to control human enemies.
• Upgrade your Salts! - Focus on Salts because those blue Salt phials found throughout the game can replenish up to 80% of your Salts meter.
• Upgrade what you use most - You should consider upgrading whichever vigor fits your playstyle best. Only do this once, if at all, as upgrades are costly.
• Distract, Divert, Deflect, Disable - Primarily use defensive Vigors that distract enemies, divert attention away from Booker, deflect bullets, or incapacitate enemies on 1999 (Murder of Crows, Possession, Return to Sender, and Bucking Bronco).
• Undertow is a hidden gem - Undertow allows you to pull a distant enemy directly to you. This is extremely useful while fighting specialty enemies such as snipers or flak cannons.
• Bucking Bronco + Undertow - This combination can easily allow the player to knock groups of enemies off Columbia completely, providing an instant kill. This tactic can also be used on Heavy Hitters such as the Firemen.

Weapons
In Bioshock Infinite, you can only have two weapons at any given time. This will keep you on your toes in 1999 mode as the weapon you bring into battle can change the fight from difficult to a cakewalk.

• Have a mid-ranged & long-ranged weapon - Always on hand, like Shotgun + Handcannon.
• Conserve ammo - Never fire wildly in 1999 Mode. If you're going to shoot at something, make sure it hits.
• Scavenge for ammo - Check every body, crate, and even trashcan. Ammo is accounted for even if you don't own the gun you pick up ammo for.
• Scavenger's Vest - It's a Gear that makes enemies provide ammo upon death 40% of the time.
• Upgrade your primaries only - With limited resources, try to focus upgrading your two primary weapons only.

Gear
Gear are the "Tonics" of Bioshock Infinite. What you have equipped could mean the difference between life and death. It can be hard to know what gear is best in situations so we'll better prepare you here.

• Use gear that involves health or grants invulnerability - Includes "Winter Shield", "Sheltered Life"
• Dress for the occasion - Different fights require different strategy and swapping gear to your advantage is key to getting out of some tough scraps. Switch Gears when going from exploration to battle. For example, the gear "Extra! Extra!" grants Silver Eagles for any Voxophone obtained.

Infusions
Shields > Salts > Health

SHIELD
As previously stated in the Survival section of this page, when playing on the 1999 Mode difficulty setting, one would do best to upgrade the Shieldfirst. At the very least, upgrade Shield and Salts in a 2:1 ratio.

There are several reasons for this option. Having a larger shield bar will allow you more experimentation which is, arguably, one of the most important aspects of surviving 1999 Mode. You need to be able to move/sprint between cover, poke your head up and fire a few shots while looking around, then duck back down without worrying that your shield will be destroyed in one shot from an enemy's pistol.

Also, while utterly obvious, the Shield automatically recharges. You don't need to scour Columbia or kill foes and loot their bodies to recharge your shield. Replenishing your Shield is one less thing to worry about and having a bigger bar makes this aspect even more of a relief.

SALTS
After your Shield is at an appropriate bolstered level, dump your Infusion bottles into your Salts meter. As mentioned previously, if you don't feel comfortable focusing only on one aspect at a time, upgrade Shield to Salts in a 2:1 Infusion ratio.

Like the Shield, Salts are more important to upgrade than Health for reasons not necessarily specific to 1999 Mode. Salts power your Vigors, and Vigors power combat versatility. Using your powers can make fights shorter and, when every fight feels like a boss fight, this can only be a good thing.

Once you have placed an 8th Infusion into your Salt meter, you might want to stop and move onto Health. The primary reason for this is that, if you are heavily relying on Shock Jockey or Bucking Bronco, the 9th and 10th Infusions will not yield an extra cast of these two Vigors.

Heavy Hitters
Heavy Hitters are the most dangerous enemies in the game. They can destroy you with ease on 1999. Fortunately, there are some great ways to get past them.

SIREN
The Siren is one of the most difficult Heavy Hitters in the game. She has a devastating AoE attack that will wipe out your shield and she won't stop summoning the dead for as long as she's around.

1) In the fights in the Graveyard and the Bank you can hide behind a large coffin in the crypt and behind the large vault door respectively. Doing this will mean that her undead will not even approach you and you'll be safe to take her out from afar. The Siren takes 24 headshots with the sniper to finish off but once she's dead, all her undead will be gone as well.

2) A good tactic to use in the fights it to get rid of her support first. To do this you must use the Shock Jockeyor Devil's Kissvigors as any enemy killed while under the effect of one of them will disintegrate upon death and cannot be resurrected. Use of the Storm Hat is highly recommended as you can easily chain the effect through a group using very few salts. After you have cleared all her support away the fight becomes very easy on any difficulty level.

4) Alternate Strategy for beating her in seconds:

Requirements:

Vigors: Charge upgraded with at least invincibility.
Gear: Pants - Brittle-Skinned (melee vulnerability), Hat - Electric Punch or Burning Halo.
Weapons: Shotgun or Sniper or Hand Cannon

Strategy:

As soon as you see the Siren use Charge. Fire 1-2 shots then cast Murder of Crows to temporarily stun the other enemies. The keep switching off between Charge and shooting. If the crows run out, cast them again. When charging you can't die and will regain some shield. The Gear will make her highly susceptible to damage. If you have Burning Halo, she is also weak to fire.

The damage output on this build is INSANE, but it costs a lot of salts. This is a high risk, high reward strategy.

If it works, the battle is over in 10 seconds. If you die just reload the checkpoint and try again.

HANDYMAN
The Handymen are the large armor-infused men with a weak spot in the glowing hearts.

The best way to take these down is to use sky rails while he's not electrocuting them. If the player has the gear "Winter Shield", it grants him the ability to be invulnerable when landing off of the Sky-Lines. There are no penalties for using it so the gear's ability can be spammed.

Take advantage of the game's glitches. The Handymen can get stuck, giving you the chance to just stand in front of them and shoot. The first one gets stuck on the roof near Chen Lin's gunshop, the second one can get stuck on the stairs on the far end, and the third can get stuck on the airship that the Vox bring into battle.

Another strategy is to bounce yourself on top of the level using the Handyman's charge. Once you are on top of the level the Handyman will just stand there letting you shoot him.


MOTORIZED PATRIOTS
There are only a few tricks to Patriots, unfortunately. They can be stopped in their tracks with Shock Jockey and then just aim at the gears on their backs to do the most damage possible. While it is possible to use possession on the patriots it isnt recommended in this mode as it kills too much salt for a short duration.

Another helpful hint is to use Undertow on them. Because Patriots take damage from electricity, they take an equal (and sometimes greater) amount of damage from the water. Couple this with the Storm Hat (which moves effects to those around the victim) and you can, in theory, cripple an entire wave in one fell swoop. Run behind the patriot, fire another Undertow, and then choose your best weapon/vigor for damage and fire away.

There is one trick to fighting them on the final fight on the Command Deck. By going up to the highest point, you can grab Patriots up to you with Undertow and they will end up stuck there. Doing this prevents them from damaging you or the ship.

The Final Battle
The final battle is the toughest challenge in 1999 mode. To survive this mode you will have to keep track of the Zeppelins and barges first and foremost.

If you kill all the enemies on the ground before you have destroyed the Zeppelins and barges you will cause a new wave of ground enemies to spawn. DO NOT DO THIS!

There will be a total of Three Zeppelins that must be taken down for this segment to end. As soon as the Objective is presented, manually take one down yourself, and order Songbird to take the other Zeppelin when it spawns. This will speed up the final battle.
