From an evolutionary standpoint, it's to reproduce and survive. That's how evolution works, natural selection picks the "strongest" species, meaning most able to survive and create offspring. In humans, evolution has stopped though. There's no more survival of the fittest
But it's still programmed into our bodies. Like, adrenaline that helps you fight or flight when it's needed (not very often nowadays), and dopamine when you eat food or reproduce
