    I don't keep my profile private when inactive (I just set it private because I want to keep some things private), but for the profile picture, it's just to indicate that you are "gone" for some special occasion. You'd probably get spammed if your profile is left open, but the profile picture.. I don't know the SCIENCE behind it.
