yes, in the anime, they travel back, but instead of his full body, they're holding his arms because they were torn apart or smth.

he died, but two girls survived, and I think it was Ayumi and Naomi? or at least the class rep and the girl who's best friend was hung. I forgot their names x'd hopefully got it right
