Unionised can be read 1 of two ways. This creates some confusion especially if the context isn't entirely clear. I took this topic from a post, which basically placed two groups together and said: no I don't reddit however I decided to link where it stated the origin was. "How to figure out the Plumbers (or any other trade) vs the Chemists" vs I'll put a poll where you can vote and we'll see what the majority say. Please vote for how you FIRST read the word, not what you read after seeing both versions. Since I do Chemistry, I read it as a Chemist. Spoiler: Explanation Spoiler: If you voted "Union-nised" Union-nised, or You-Yon-Nye-sd, basically means you read it as a tradie. Plumber in the quote's words. A union is what most tradies belong to since it provides fairer opportunities (such as representatives for workers against large CEO's and higher wages and so forth) Spoiler: If you voted "Un-ion-nised" Un-ion-nised, or Un-Eye-On-Nye-sd, means you read it in Chemistry terms. An ion is an atom that has lost or gained electrons. An unionised atom means an atom that has the same number of electrons as it does protons.
It's just like any other words that end with the "ise" or "ize" suffix, for example, pulverise is pronounced pulver-ise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but unionised only has one meaning? Becoming members of a trade union. So, therefore, I think it's much more pronounced union-ised.
I've definitely come across "Un-ionised" before. It definitely wouldn't be as common but it exists \o/ The fact I've had 2 different inputs is why I made this thread. It's definitely interesting though.
I read it both ways, taking chemistry so I pick it up from there, and I always read it as unionized before anything else, unless I'm in chemistry...
I've never heard people say unionised in relation to chemistry, they usually say non-ionized. It's kind of weird to call yourself a chemist because of the way you pronounce things tbh
It's more in a way of those online tests. You don't rely on them for answers but rather use it for a bit of fun, sort of what this thread was going for \o/
