So I started reading Homestuck

I at the point where the ghost grandma tell the kid about his mission, but I'm very confused

They get Beta, but... it's a game
They captchalogue(I've never typed this word and google chrome knows it) things with some sort of formula, and the captchalogue affects them, by tossing things out conveniently, but what is it? Is it part of Beta? Or are they in game, playing a game? Are you playing the game, that they are in? Or are they playing the game that they are in? Is the shady guy playing the game? Am I just over analysing this? Is Beta real life, or is the main girl character controlling the main guy, is he real, but she has a captchalogue, and is it some sort of hammer space thing?

I'm so confused, sorry for the multitude of questions

 

Ahem. Let me help you here.

Before they play the game is all real life. It's how it works. Like, there's just naturally captchaloguing in real life. The formula is the type of sylladex, or storage style of captchalogued items. The Captchalogue spits stuff out when either:

It's full
Or
Something happened to upset the balance of the syladex.

So, let's just say you have a sylladex where you can only have 3 items beginning with b at a time. It also has a maximum item limit of 10. Say you have a banana, box, bar, and a banner. The banner would be spit out, if it was the 4th b. Or, if 10 other items were in the sylladex, the last added being the banner, it would be spit out.

You are not playing the game. You are simply reading about the kids.

Only the 4 kids are playing the game, and then other players called trolls which look a bit different, but overall the same. I don;t know who the "shady guy" is.

Please clarify about the hammer part, and I can answer about that, too.
