Can you prove a screenshot of it? as that will help a lot or a video is much better also it can be because you're not fully looking up or down when placing it as it's very hard to place it perfectly.
I don't think this glitch is server-side. On the minecraft bug-tracker, you can see there is a piston placement glitch for 1.8. If I'm wrong, you may want to send some screenshots/a video to help us better understand what you mean.
Camera angle usually affects this. If you're placing a piston on its side, but you're slightly above it's location, it'll face up. I believe it relates to the issue you're having. I suggest looking straight up/down while placing, and being above/below it as well.
I'm pretty sure this isn't a bug at all and he's just having trouble with having the right camera angle for placing pistons..
