This is essentially YouTube at the moment, I'm not even kidding. that's the CEO of YouTube by the way lol Before I start anything, I know YouTube is a private company, but when they pull of something this scummy, everyone reserves the right to complain. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, you might be asking why I am comparing YouTube to Hitler today. I don't blame you for asking, because that is quite far-fetched from an outside view, but hopefully you will understand where I'm coming from after your done reading this. I'm willing to bet money that a lot of you might already be predicting what I am going to talk about today, so if you're one of those people, congratulations, but I'm still going to go into context and start from the beginning. ------------------------------------- Phase One, the First Censorship Controversy. Spoiler: Citation. These videos were made when the backlash intensified in Augest and September, and a lot of these videos do have swearing, so if you mind that, then you can skip.. basically all of them. A lot of you probably aren't going to watch these, but I must put them there for citation. Back in the months of Augest and September, YouTube changed their Terms of Service, albeit slightly, but the change they did make caused the entire site and even places on the Internet aboard to generate major backlash. Spoiler: Source of the backlash To simplify what was happening at the time, anything even related to anything controversial, (politics, war, natural disasters, etc), would not be monetized, therefore making anyone who creates those types of videos to not make money, which is vital for their channels. So, big YouTube channels such as LeafyIsHere, GradeAUnderA, Pyrocynical, and so many others made videos complaining about this, but to my knowledge, to no avail. While everything was not as bad as it seemed to be, everyone was at least partially correct, and still to this day videos are being de-monetized due to videos 'not being advertiser friendly'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phase Two, "YouTube Nazis". I've already made a thread about this in the past, so I will link it here for citation and a more in depth explaination on this 'phase' than I will on this thread. http://itsjerryandharry.com/threads/youtube-has-gone-full-fascist.98702/ A very simple run down of this for everyone who does not wish to read or even click on the link I provided, YouTube introduced a new program, (or whatever it is), called "YouTube Heroes". People could become a YouTube 'Hero' by added subtitles to videos, and various other things, and as they progress with the system they get more administrative powers such as being able to mass flag videos and moderate comments sections on any video on the site. Consider this the SJW takeover of the site. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now/Inspiration for this thread. YouTube at the moment, I believe I can say this for fact, is in its worst state since its inception in 2005. Currently, problems facing the site are destabilizing all content creators on the site, ranging from getting videos demonetized, unsubscribing people automatically from their favorite channels, and trolls going around. Not a good situation to be in if your a content creator. A lot of the problems facing the site right now a majority of you already know about, so I do not have to provide more insight on the situation than what I have already have. The inspiration for this thread comes from how all of these things are affecting me personally, and people I like to watch, especially political commentators. China Uncensored is one of my favorite political channels on the site, and it sucks to see that they are being negatively affected by this, considering they are helping create opposition to the Chinese Communist Party. This is what the host of the show had to say about the situation going on at the moment. Yes, it's Ssundee, but I do enjoy watching his content from time to time, because he is genuinely a good guy and I do like supporting channel. He had something to say about this as well, and I thought he made a good video explaining what's going on, among other things. ..I could put so many more videos here, but I think I've made my case clear. YouTube has literally turned into Hitler. —————————————————————— Tell me what you guys think, is this situation something to worry about, or not? Is there anything we can do about this, or do we just go with the flow? If you have anything to say, be sure to tell me and everyone else that might see this thread, we're all wiling to hear you out. ~ Venom.
So not paying for them means they're being censored? No, it doesn't. YouTube's actions are completely logical. Obviously other companies who want their advertisements to appear on YouTube want them on videos that aren't controversial, and YouTube is leaning on these guys.
The problem is that YouTube isn't monotizing a good amount of videos made by anything deemed 'offensive' in today's society. That's not even the start of it really. Since any political channel, or just any channel that makes 'controversial' content will have their videos demonetized simply because they are talking about recent events, therefore those channels lose money. In a lot of cases, it can seriously hurt them just for talking about real life issues. It's confusing because, right up until recently, advertisers did not mind associating their content with these videos, and a golden statement from one of the videos I have mentioned above, (to be more specific, the video I linked from China Uncensored), advertisers already could choose what content they wanted their name as a business to be associated with, and suddenly people's content stopped generating revenue when YouTube made these changes. It's a form of self-censorship, "Hey, stop making political videos or we won't pay you any more!" Basically, it's a choice between getting money, or having a chance to receive no money at all from some of your videos.
Even if YouTube is acting like Hitler, they can legally do so, because they are a private company, and freedom of speech doesn't apply to the medium of the company, it only applies as a public right.
I honestly don't care to much about this because it only effects the cancerous channels on Youtube. The channels who actually work super hard on each video (Like Devinsupertramp or Casey Niestat) still get money from being on youtube like they should. Never understood why people like Leafy who just rant on the internet should make millions. But whatever doesn't affect my life
They're not losing money or being censored, they're just not being payed for it. You're only looking at one side of the issue. When you think of it, YouTube's moves make total sense, even if they're not too good for some creators. It's not up to YouTube, it's up to the advertisers who no longer want to pay to have their advertisements on certain videos. Spoiler
^ This. It's not YouTube, but the companies who don't want their ads on videos they don't like, such as drama instigating videos, or just videos which they think are disgusting. YouTube is only enforcing this rule because they don't want companies to start pulling off their ads from the site, which would result in a loss of revenue to both YouTube, and content creators. But this still doesn't excuse them for being so shady this year.
Monotizing videos isn't, and shouldn't be what youtubers rely on. You're stupid if you think you can soley rely on monotization money. Animators have patreons for a reason and podcasts have sponsors for a reason. I think the gross(noun gross, not adj gross) $$$/view of advertisement is $1/1000 views. Amd that's of the ADVERTISEMENTS. So people who have adblock are now your worst enemy as a YTer. GG, Youtube. But at the same time, you can't blame YT for doing this stuff. YT needs to promote unchallenging content bc unchallenging content is what advertisers want to be affiliated with(to avoid bad rep). Youtube needs those advertisers, too, because they only makes 6% of Google's total income. Youtube might actually be shut down if they don't amp up their revenue big time. Cutting off a large, unneeded section of your company that generates single-digit percentages is not a bad move on google's part. They'd also either fire the YT team or reallocate them to other parts of google. Again, not bad business moves. It also removes everything on it, the good and the bad. But atleast Google won't be known for having people like Keemstar, Leafy, Grade, Pyro, Collossal, ect. on their platform. Whatever your opinions on their content are, the people themselves are extremely toxic, and alot of their followers reflect that. Yeah, they'll probs loose their pewdiepies, septiceyes, markipliers, ect., But they're still not being associated with toxic outputs.
