So out of randomness I decided to start building this, but I couldn't stop kicking myself after I reached world limit so I had to lay the model down. Basically this character is about 500 blocks tall, and it took me a lot more time than I had expected to finish it. Problems: I can't seem to build the perfect anime eye, so the character does look a bit alien.
I'm pretty sure on the minecraft launcher or something you can change the build limit, but I don't know if that is outdated anymore.
Oh dear lord if you have any knowledge, I would kill to know it haha. I've been starting huge projects and I want to build things that will never fit in the worlds. The sky is the limit for me (literally).
It would take me awhile to find out (I have NO time right now) but for about 5 blocks more of space, try making it in a void world. You go to superflat, custom presets, and in the text you backspace everything and put 0;0. Turn off natural generation of caves and such then open your world. You will be spawned at the Y coordinate of 0, so you have to immediately fly up. There's an extra few blocks for you. And also: do /setblock ~ ~ ~ (Name of block) to make a block appear in your complete void land. This should help a bit :)
I've screwed around a bit with my WorldEdit and it is possible for me to set first position above the build limit and use commands from there, however it can get a bit annoying as if I break a block, I have to use commands to get the darn thing back. The second position is sensitive, however. It will not let me select a position with my //wand, so any second positions above y:256 require the //pos2 command.
