I'm almost certain that most people here have a life, despite this being not really gaming related, but was wondering if anyone can give me advice. I have been playing volleyball for 4 year now and I'm gonna be trying out for my school's team again in the spring, so I have been practicing with some friends at a local court. I have noticed everything like topspin serving, blocking, digging, passing, setting, and what more are fine, but I am struggling with my spike timing. I keep getting under the ball, and psyching myself out. Any tips? Any advice on improving my vertical is also greatly appreciated. :)
Good im a god at volleyball. So first how tall are you? And how high can u jum And itill be my 4th year too :)
Im about 5'11", maybe 6' in shoes, but I haven't checked my vertical, but for now, I can get my forearm above a highschool net.
Maybe when the ball is thrown up in the air and you can run up and get it, and there is no body blocking the area you want to spike it, Go ahead.
Its all about timing and coordination. Depending where on the court your at and where the ball is in the air is how you have to spike. If your on the left side. Run up and as soon as the ball starts going down go jordan and spike it down.
That's the problem, I can't time it perfectly using a 3-step approach and managing to get on top of the ball.
I have the same problem as you, I'm always ether too slow or too fast. Don't worry about the 3-step approach thing too much, Your steps don't have to be perfect as long as you can spike the ball it's okay, in my opinion. Btw practice a lot as well, tryouts are tough.
I dunno if you do spiking drills but if you do, use them to your advantage. Like Paris said you don't necessarily need to use the 3-step approach it's just helpful with momentum and concentrating power from your legs. If it just screws you up (it does for me) then don't do it at all because it's only there to help you not to guide you. If not using it still doesn't help and you can't get over the ball, either ask a friend who knows how to set or use a wall to train you. I'm sure someone who's trying to improve their setting will gladly help you out and give you easy passes to practice on. If not then use a wall and toss the ball to yourself as if you were doing an overhand serve (except you'd want the ball to go hard to the ground- the wall is there to stop it from going far). Other than that I'd say you should start jumping for the ball right before it reaches the vertex of its toss and you should be able to hit it right on time. I also do this thing where i count in my head to 3 as I move closer to where the ball will fall and spike on 3, but it doesn't always work for everyone
