Chapter 7: Abilities​

Waking up is probably one the worst things you could tell me to do. It's not that I don't like being alive, it's that I'll probably be in a good dream.
I woke up to none other than a white-robed mage's scream: "Breakfast!"
I hit my head on the ceiling of the small bedroom and found Louise on the floor of the room. "Where you alarmed by Kat's scream?" I asked her.
"Yes. She always does this, but her food's really good. I can't argue with her."
"Are we talking about pancakes?"
"YES! They're normal pancakes, but something about them tastes so heavenly!"
"Are you sure she didn't enchant them? She IS the witch with light-related powers."
"But it's still food right?"
"I can't argue with that."

Louise and I headed to the dining hall to have some of Kat's pancakes. Louise was right about Kat's pancakes; they were really soft. Kazuke, Kat, Twage, Xeno and nala were with us to eat. When we were finished, nala talked about the agenda.
"Okay, today, we are going to the training rooms and spar." nala said.
"What do you mean by 'spar?'" I asked.
"It means each of us is paired with someone. nala is going to oversee that no one is hurt." Twage said.
"Okay, get it? Got it? Good. Kat, you're with Louise just like last time. Twage, take Kazuke, and Kono, you'll actually watch Xeno and I for the first time. Then I'll get you a secondary weapon." nala said.

We headed to the training room from the dining hall. We entered the main hall and took an immediate right turn to a corridor with three branching rooms. Louise and Kat entered the one on the right, Twage and Kazuke entered the one in the middle, and Xeno, nala, and I entered the final one. Each large room seemed to be plain with a white carpeted floor and a few lights. I'm thinking the carpet would get stained by blood though. Oh wait, what's that re- nevermind.
"Mmm, Kono?" nala said.
"Yes?"
"Here." She tossed me a small white cloth with something inside. "Keep this with you." she said.
I unraveled the cloth to find a dagger in it. The feeling of it in my hand sparked a memory of me back in someplace, but I can't put my finger on it. What was that place called again? I just hugged nala without even thinking. I let go of her.
"Thank you, nala." I said, "This dagger gave me something: a sense of completion."
"You're welcome." nala said, "Xeno, let's show her what sparring is."
"It's really simple, Kono. Just knock the opponent out, or get them down in order to win a round." Xeno said.
nala and Xeno took opposing sides of the carpet while I stood in a corner and watched. The battle started and nala immediately grabbed Xeno and easily smashed him to the ground. Xeno didn't have a chance to cast a spell. nala walked over to Xeno lying down and got him back up.
"Now it's your turn, Kono. Show me your moves! Oh and put down that dagger. We don't want another accident." Xeno said.
I didn't want to fight Xeno, especially because I have no physical strength whatsoever, but I had to try anyway. I stepped onto the place nala started on, and Xeno went to his.
"Ready! Begin!" nala yelled.
Xeno charged at me and I dodged him. He then shot a fireball at me and I just whimpered and closed my eyes while holding my left hand out towards the fire's direction. I didn't feel any flame or heat. When I opened my eyes, I saw a confused Xeno and an astonished nala.
"W- what did you just do?" Xeno asked, "I can't summon any flame!"
"I- I don't know what I just did!" I said, "I just did this!" I thrust my left hand and a fireball popped out. "Wait! That's not supposed to happen, right?"
"I can't believe it. In all my years, I've never seen an absorber before." nala said, "It means you can absorb magic and disable magic in the user. If you absorb someone's ability, they won't be able to use it until you release it or use it. Your freeze ability might be copied then."
With that, Xeno thrust his hand out and cast his fireball perfectly.

Chapter 8: Radii​

After the absorption incident, nala gathered us all in the training room corridor and whispered something to Twage. I couldn't make it out, but it sounded like I was in big trouble.
"Everyone, get inside." Twage said. We all entered the room Xeno, nala and I came from. I could hear Louise and Kat whispering to each other about something, as well as Kazuke and Xeno. It was only a matter of time until-
"Kono?" Twage said.
"Yes sir!" I said while trying not to look startled.
"It has come to my attention that you have an ability that nala and I have never heard of," Twage said, "and it is my duty to ensure its cultivation."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"We're going to do some tests. It's probably going to be painful for some, but to ensure we win, it's our only hope."
"For the last time, what do you mean!?"
"I think we should all sit down for this." Twage suggested, "I'm going to explain everything, some stuff that even you don't know, nala."
"Okay, now I want to slap you." nala said. We all took Twage's suggestion and sat in a circle on the carpet.
"Well, first off, I'm going to say stuff that nala knows already, whether she likes it or not." Twage said while avoiding nala's glare. "Radii."
"What did you say?" I asked.
"I just said the name of the enemy. She is a cruel, cruel person and needs to be taken out. We've already lost so many forces thanks to her, and this is all we have left: us seven. I'm really grateful that you, Louise, Xeno, Kat, and Kazuke showed up, Kono. Now, Radii is an evil witch. She's an expert at manipulation, and her magic is that of telepathy and mind control. I've heard stories from nala about her. Wanna take the stand, nala?" Twage suggested.
"Gladly. I haven't been honest with you Twage. Radii is more than just an enemy to me. She was my best friend. We used to live in harmony with the humans, but she got greedy. She wanted control over them. Something happened and I never wanted to face her again. When we did, she manipulated our minds and sent us back here. It's cruel of her not to finish us off." nala said.
"Wait, if she manipulated your minds, how do you not have amnesia?" Kazuke asked.
"I keep a journal. We all have; we just scribble in our tomes." nala said.
"Anyway, here's where things get complicated. nala's known that I've been studying magic theory in addition to combat, and I've effectively found that magic's divided into two categories, physical and special. Physical magic is like Louise's or Kat's where they're able to transform or matter-controlling magic, and special magic is any type of projectile magic. It's confusing, so I don't want to delve into it. What you've proved today Kono, is that you can absorb special magic. Let's test if you can absorb physical magic." Twage suggested.
"Alright, but on who?" I asked.
"Me, for science. Don't try to stop me, nala." Twage said. We all stared at him in shock that he would offer up his power for this purpose. I took his suggestion and raised my right hand towards Twage. I tried feeling it like nala suggested but it didn't work.
"Use your left, Kono." Xeno said, "Different hands produce different results: like I use my right for fire and left for water."
I tried again with the left. At that moment a brown aura seeped from him and transferred to my hand. It didn't look like Twage felt any pain while I absorbed his magic. The absorption was complete and Twage couldn't cause a quake. "Just feel it, Kono. Make a small quake." he said.
I tried making a quake and stopped it once it got to a high point. "Nice." Twage said.
I put out my right hand and transferred the power back to Twage and a slight tremor awakened.
"Oops. Don't be alarmed. I keep my power under control normally and it kinda hurt when you transferred it back." Twage said.
Without any hesitation, a voice said, "I'm hungry." It turns out the voice was nala. "Kat?"
"Fine." Kat said while walking out the door.

Chapter 9: Amplification​

It was just a normal day as always after I discovered the new ability. Well, who I am I to say anything? I've only been in this mansion-like building for a day. Kat walked off to whip up something after nala "ordered" her to. She's too nice. I knew people who just gave orders by kicking them in the gut and yelling at them. I guess it's just natural for Kat to be pushed around now. I wish I could do something, but I don't want to get in it. Kat seems to be enjoying it though. She must really love cooking. It's been a while since Kat left the training room. nala left the room too, leaving Xeno, Twage, Louise, and Kazuke with me, and to be frank, all we've done since they left was "train" with my absorption.
"Just in case one of us falls in battle, you can use the fallen's ability!" Twage suggested, "like this!"
Twage gestured me to absorb a lying-down Kazuke's power. I did as he gestured. Kazuke was probably sleeping as he was twisting and turning while the absorption was taking place. "Yes! Success!" Twage said.
"I've never seen Kaz use his aeromancy actually." I said.
"We don't really need air down here. Of course we do, it's just that the structure here is so well built, Kaz doesn't need to do anything." Twage responded.
"That makes sense." I said while figuring out Kaz's power. I tried thrusting my hand out and I felt a surge of wind traveling towards the training room wall. Before I could figure anything out, the wind developed into a light-blue arc and destroyed the wall. "Oops. You can fix that right?" I asked.
"Of course I can." Twage replied while gesturing rock to patch up the hole.
"That power of yours is amazing!" I said.
"I guess so. I could do better though." Twage said.
nala walked into the training room and dragged Twage by the ear outside. All I could hear was the sounds of pain Twage excreted from his mouth. nala put her head back in the room and said to everyone in the room, "Dinner's ready! Twage and I'll meet you in the dining room!"
Without hesitation, I gave Kaz his aeromancy back and Xeno and I headed out the door to leave Louise to wake up Kaz.

At the dining room, Kat went through the same motions as the night before, but it seemed that she seemed a bit ticked off and angered. She entered the dining room with a cart with seven metal trays and laid each one down on the table. She then slumped down on one of the chairs and ate one of the platters she made. I was scared to approach her at the time.
"Hey Kat," Xeno said, "are you okay?"
"Yah, I'm fine. Go eat. I'm just a little annoyed at the position nala's put me in." Kat said.
"Oh thanks." Xeno said as we sat down next to her. Kaz, Louise, nala, and Twage entered the room and sat down at the table. Kat just stared at nala and her salmon at the same time.
"Hey Twage?" nala said. I didn't notice until now, but Twage looked ticked off. He looked like he didn't want any part of what we were doing.
"What?" Twage said harshly.
"I'm sorry for what went on." nala said.
"Well sorry's not enough." Twage said.
"I'M SORRY!" nala yelled.
At that moment, something weird happened. Twage slammed his fist on the table and it happened. nala's plate of salmon jumped and hit her in the face. nala just slumped in her chair and Xeno rushed over to see if she was alright.
"There's still a pulse, Twage. What were you two talking about?" Xeno asked.
Twage didn't answer. Twage just looked mortified at what happened and stared at his hands, the same way I looked at my hands when I froze the ball of ice.

Chapter 10: LegendsAndVoices​

Kat and Xeno rushed nala to her quarters for rest after she fainted from a blow to the head. It was just Louise, Kazuke, Twage and me inside the dining room, and none of us dared to say a word.
"It's too quiet." a voice said. I was facing the ground in shock the whole time. I lifted my head up to see Kazuke standing up.
"We all want to know, Twage. What happened with you and nala? We're here for you." Louise said.
Twage slumped in his chair more and then sat up with a sigh of relief. "It'll come out anyway. Might as well tell you all now, though. What just happened with the metal plate confirmed my theory. nala detected a disturbance in your power, Kono."
I jumped up at the mention of my name. "Me?!" I said like a student in trouble.
"Yes. Well, nala thought it would be dangerous to use your power, but Xeno hasn't experienced any effect. Kaz and I haven't, either, until now. We all thought your absorption was one-of-a-kind, but we never would've thought it would come to this. In the short time nala left you and me in the training room, she actually went to her personal quarters. Only those in her room will know about it now. She has a secret in there: a library. There's a book in there that described someone with an extraordinary power. That person's you, Kono. I did more research in that library and that extraordinary power is the power to absorb a witch's essence and put it back in a more potent form. This means you can unlock abilities or even change our abilities. What this could do to our bodies, I don't know." Twage said.
I didn't expect anything special, maybe just a chastising voice. I felt a gust of wind and I was blown out of my chair.
"Kaz!" Louise yelled, "What're you doing?!"
"She's a threat. She cannot be trusted." Kaz said as I struggled to get up.
"No. It's fine." I said, "If he wants to fight, I'll fight. I just need to say one-"
Kazuke immediately shot another gust of wind and I absorbed it. Kazuke tried firing another bolt but he couldn't.
"Listen Kaz, I'm not a threat." I said, "I'm here to help you." I tried thinking about shooting a weak gust of wind at Kazuke and shot the gust at him. He didn't feel any effect because it was really weak. Then I remembered that I already absorbed his essence once so an ability would already be unlocked. I thought of something related to wind and said, "Watch this." Kazuke seemed intrigued by the use of my ability, and I was going to make him ever faithful. I ran towards a wall and jumped towards it, leaping off the wall. At that moment, I called the winds to guide me through the air in the room. It was like I was flying. Then I landed next to Kazuke and gave his power back to him. Kazuke was still in awe at what happened.
"You okay?" I asked.
"H- how did you do that?" he asked.
"Well, I got a running start and had the air carry me. That's pretty much it." I said, "Hey, shouldn't Kat and Xeno be back? Or at least one of them?"
"Yah.... They should be. Wait, oh no. This way!" Twage said, "We're going to nala's room!"

We all ran to the main quarters. Again, the building was like a mausoleum. We had to make many twists and turns to get to the quarters. When we got to the sliding doors to nala's room, it was quiet, but then we all heard a voice. None of us could make it out, so Twage slid open the doors to find a dark room.
"Heh, so you finally found me out haven't you?" a familiar voice said.
I butted in with, "Wait, that voice!"
"You fool, Kono. You should've just took me out when you had the chance that one night." the voice said, "Oh well. I'll be found out anyways, so I might as well show myself shouldn't I?"
"Yes you should, you creep!" Louise yelled.
"Well here goes." An orb of light appeared and it grew to light the torches of the main quarters. On the bed was nala lying on her regal bed and Xeno lying on the floor. In the back of the room was a large window looking out into the sea and on the right behind the bed was a door with a puzzle-lock. A black-robed figure stood next to the puzzle-lock. My intuition told me who the culprit was already.
"You dirty scum!" Kaz said.
"Of course it's me, Kaz." Kat said, "How could you not know?"

Yes, that ominous voice was Kat all this time. She told me I could put that as a plot device, but I don't want to reveal too much.

Chapter 11: MysteriousIntruder​

"Kat! Why would you attack Xeno!?" I yelled in anger.
"Puny fool." the light mage said. Kat shot a beam of light at us and I held out my hand to absorb it. Instead, Louise and Kaz dodged while Twage grabbed my out-reached hand and instinctively dodged behind a fallen table.
"But, I had her right?" I asked Twage.
"Yes you did. She doesn't know about you yet." Twage said, "We need to keep your power under wraps."
"Hah! Are you talking about that little sparkle-sparkle magic you do? What are you gonna do? Throw ice cubes at me?" Kat asked.
"Why is she so different?" Kaz asked Twage, "Normally she's so quiet and supportive!"
"She's under an influence." Twage replied.
"You're not talking about-" Louise asked.
"Yes. Kat's mind is being controlled by none other than Radii. It actually all makes sense now." Twage said, "She was moody ever since we had a certain battle and she would always want to volunteer right off the bat to cook. Now she got in a few arguments with nala and just decided to lay low."
"I remember now." I said, "When I first came here, Kat accused me of being a spy."
"Hey, can you four just shut up already? Blah blah blah, it's me already. Just come out of your hole and fight me! Here, I'll make it easy for you: Kono, you and Twage try to get nala and Xeno back up, and Kaz, why don't you fight me with Louise." Kat said.
"Sounds like a plan." Kazuke said with a grin. Kazuke and Louise started getting out from behind the table until I interrupted her.
"Wait, Louise." I said, "I'm sorry." I didn't want to do it because I'd be going against what Twage wanted, but it looked like he knew what I was going to do. I amplified her magic, but I didn't know what it would do for her once she was in her demon form.
"What was that?" Louise said, "I actually feel great, but something's wrong. Ehh whatevs. I saw what happened when you amplify a power, so I just gotta think of something related to a demon. Maybe fire? I don't know. Rushing into battle now!"
Louise joined Kazuke, who was keeping his flight under wraps to make sure Kat doesn't know about my power. His wind and Kat's light didn't affect each other at all, so they were continuously dodging each other's blasts. Twage and I ran to Xeno and nala, respectively to find that they were both still unconscious. We shook each of them awake but nala wouldn't budge.
"Xeno, are you okay?" Twage said.
"No! I was just unconscious! Do you think I'm okay?! Anyway, Kat ambushed me when I was going to leave the room and I tried dragging her with me. When she couldn't take it anymore, she blinded me and choked me into unconsciousness. I don't know what happened after that." Xeno said.
"She was probably trying to access that library in the back." I said while vigorously vibrating nala.
"Groaaagghh!"
We all turned our attention to the sound that erupted. It was Louise and it looked like her power did get stronger. Instead of tiny horns and longer fingers when angry, she grew a foot in size, grew long horns, a two-foot long tail and pure-black scales, and made her own hands into talons. What looked even more demonic was what was coming out of her long-toothed mouth: fire. It looked like she was able to fully control the power still. She grabbed Kat and started pummeling her, but as a last resort, Kat gestured the light in the room to bind her. Louise's demon form was writhing in pain as the light squeezed the life out of her.
"Louise!" Xeno yelled while thrusting his hand out towards Kat. Xeno probably didn't know what was going on at the time either, because when he thrust out his hand, Kat flew and hit her head on the puzzle-lock of the library door. She was out cold. nala's lifeless body jumped when Kat's head bumped into the lock. Louise was freed from the chains and was already in her human form but still fatigued. Kazuke rushed over to Kat's side to check her vitals and gave a frown. nala got up and looked around at what happened in the room.
"Since when?" I asked.
"Probably because of that fireball you absorbed I can probably only do this in anger for now." Xeno said.
"What happened to my room?" nala asked.
"Well.... Long story." Twage replied. He told nala about everything: Kat's enslavement and my power and what I enhanced so far.
"Well, I didn't expect you to master it so quickly, Kono." nala said, "So you gave Louise pyromancy, Kazuke, the power of flight, Xeno, telekinesis, and Twage, magnetism. Brilliant work!"
"But it really wasn't intended." I said.
"Whatever." nala said.
At that moment, a purple, aura-like gas came out of Kat and chuckled. "Well done, nemesis. I guess I've used this puppet far too long enough. She'll be dead if you don't do anything about it, like all your other students. Listen well, us witches are far too superior. We should be ruling the world! But you decide to protect them. They'll still look at you like freaks. Join me."
"Can it." I said while absorbing the purple aura. I really didn't know what the purple aura was or if it would control me later on, but nothing happened after I absorbed it. I probably sealed it off until later on.
"Help!" Kazuke yelled, "She's bleeding!"
"Don't worry. Xeno, can you take some glass off the back so I can get some water for her?" nala asked.
Xeno did as was ordered and nala gestured the water to heal Kat.
"She needs to rest. I'll bunk with you two, Kono and Louise tonight. There's no way I'm carrying her there. Just lay her on my bed." nala said, "You know, I think we can actually take Radii down. We can take on the hordes of witches she has with your power, Kono. If you absorb Radii's power, she'll be finished. We'll start later on. For now, we should all get some sleep. I'll stay here for now to check up on Kat from time to time. And what's in that library you may be asking? Let's just say it's some memories that I want hidden. If you want to read some of the books, just ask me. Let's just sleep already."
