Chat Program (OPEN BETA)

Hey there guys,
It's Wolf.

So, in case you don't know, I'm a software engineer / Software developer / whatever you want to call it. And my current personal venture is creating something like Skype, but without a lot of the idiosyncrasies and stupid bugsfeatures of it.

So, why should I care?

Well, I need some beta testers.
I currently will probably limit it to about 10-20 people, because I'm very limited with server resources (Free Amazon servers, anyone?). But hey - You guys get to pick your names!

Now, I'm not done with the client or the server.
But I do expect to get the initial workings of a client/server pair done within a couple weeks (depending on how Uni wants to treat me...)

So just PM me (or better yet, post on this thread), and I'll add you to the list.

Now, some caveats:

• There's no voice chatting (yet). That involves more power than I can currently afford. And more time. Codecs are nasty beings.
• The client, until further stated, will always be declared as "bleeding edge". As such, there may be crashes. You have been warned.
• The server will be "bleeding edge", also. The client SHOULD warn you in the event of a server crash, but just be ready for the times when it doesn't. Messages may not get sent.
• Finally, things may be slow, due to my low compute ability on Amazon. That's why I'm having this alpha/beta - To test things out. Get people to use it.

So what's in it for me?
Well, IF I succeed, and there becomes a premium plan, you will be premium. For life.

Update for you guys:
The server has been mostly implemented for basic things.

The client is now being worked on.
I have the graphical framework, and am just working with getting it to talk to the server, and to store things between sessions.

Alright, so, slight update for you guys:
I'm already planning an update to the version that you guys would be getting.
I really want to get this pushed out to you guys as fast as possible, and to do that, I need to forego a couple courtesy things (Nothing functional)
So, just be prepared for that.

Also, the client will be pushed out with an auto-update feature. So, you won't have to re-download the chat client like you do the Minecraft launcher.

Lol, as long as it is functional as a .jar file, (I have a damn mac and if it's exe it won't run,), I'd help XD

Will it be able to run without install and not force you to have automatic updates. I find it really among when programs do that, I don't mind downloading.

Otherwise, Flare, I don't think exes can be turned in to jars. Jar s are JavaScript files afaik.

 

1) At the current time, it'll just be a .jar that's self-executing.
2) I will add the option to disable auto-updating (But, for the current time, I recommend that you keep it enabled, because some of the code that talks with the server can change drastically...)
3).jars can be turned into .exe's, but .exe's don't run on Macs, because that's a Windows-only thing. And .jar's are Java, not Javascript. (Large, large difference)
