So I'm curious what you guys think about gun laws and gun violence in America (as well as other countries bc I know it's different there). I'm uneducated in this topic as well so if you guys could state some facts I'll be happy to read it all and form my own opinion which I will just edit this and add it in a spoiler or something later.

Please keep it civil if y'all wanna debate; idrc but I will lock the thread if you get crazy

    My opinion:
Even before I knew much about gun laws and such, I was against the whole idea of them being legal at all. I just don't understand why people want to defend themselves with a weapon that could cause even more harm. I don't like how people push killing someone, even in self defense, as a resort-- and not even a last resort. If someone threatened you in your home and you had a gun, that's the first thing you would reach for. Like stated below, there are other ways one can defend them self. And for all the people arguing the amendment rights, fuck those. The constitution was made long ago when gun use was regular. Also, the argument that the guns in the black market will increase and blablabla, that can legally be dealt with. It's not that hard. In Australia, there was mass shootings and immediately they made the gun laws very strict, resulting in a safer environment. In America, it's different and I feel like gun use should just not be legal regularly. It's giving people the chance to do something stupid. Why not just take it away as a whole?

Guns by themselves aren't bad. They become bad when they are put into a bad persons hands. I feel like we definitely need more background security on guns. I have never seen a valid argument as to why suspected terrorist should have guns, yet for some reason the republicans in the US keep voting for them to have the second amendment right. So they can't fly on a plane, but they can own a deadly fire weapon. Again doesn't make much sense to me.

Well, in new Zealand. Gun laws are very strict, we basically cant carry handguns on a person/body. You need a safe and to keep it in there without it being used, cant be out of the safe when not being used. etcetc.
New Zealand is quite strict when it comes to guns, but you can still get hands on them.
I think America should make their gun laws a little more strict tbh, its quite idiotic to have a carry gun on you at all times.
    Thats just my opinion

I feel as if America should have more strict gun regulations and laws regarding who can own and carry them. Suspected terrorists should not be allowed to own guns (coming from a Muslim lol) and neither should someone who is mentally ill. They seem to be relaxed for every state and only are ever mentioned after a mass shooting etc.

Guns are never good, put in good hands or bad it will cause harm and danger, now you can use it for good by threatening the criminal, so for example police I reckon they're the law that can be trusted with a gun and even so I am not much fan of the police because they can be unfair at times, oh well this world was never good when it comes to killing with violent objects like (gun, sword ext) the world always had trouble.

Israel - A lot of people have guns in my country because there are a lot of soldiers. Sitting in the bus next to a soldier with an M16 rifle is a pretty normal thing. However, achieving gun license as a regular citizen is very hard, and there isn't really a reason to hold a gun in most of the country anyway.

I don't feel having a gun is even needed. The most common, if not only reason Americans have guns, is they want to be able to protect themselves from break ins etc. I feel that even a controlled voltage tazer would disable the intruder for enough time to sort out the situation. I think the first stage to resolving this is controlling gun stores with who they sell to and generally making sure guns don't get in the wrong hands.

The gun laws shouldn't be removed but extensively revamped. What I suggest for guns is a hierarchical license system. How this works is that before getting your first license, you will undergo extensive background checks etc. and if you pass, you get a white gun license, which only grants you access to very small arms fire such as pistols. After a certain period of time, say a year, you can apply for a license upgrade from white to red. Before upgrading, you again undergo more background checks, and if you pass, you get the red license, which grants basic shotguns, such as the double barrel. Then the process repeats for higher level licenses which grant access to buying more powerful guns. This really fixes a lot of the problems with gun distribution in the US.

However, that's not all. Guns should be updated to a new regulation that would require them to have a smart chip, which can have an ID number on the gun, GPS, and records when the gun is fired. That way, if someone uses a gun for a crime, the police can check any guns fired in the general location of the crime, and check guns fired in the approximate time of the crime. This ensures that finding a criminal is much easier. One way to prevent people from stealing guns to avoid identification, is to have the guns turn off safety with fingerprint ID.

Revamping the system will satisfy both sides, and reduce crime simultaneously.

    - No person with mental illness should be allowed to carry.
    - No person on a suspected terror list should have one.
    - Underground selling (gun shows and such) should be criminalized.
    - The license process should be a bit stricter, but not much stricter. Self protection is vital in today's society.

I know I stand a bit offroad from my political side of things on this, I still feel like everyone should have a right to protection, however I feel like you shouldnt let people who arent fit to hold one have one. Gun crimes would decrease if more people had guns, and less people with mental illnesses had them. Im definitely in the middle on that one. Another thing to add is that a gun free zone is an open invite to people with guns and bad intentions to have a shooting range. Its honestly scary to be in one knowing nobody can defend themselves if the situation were to happen.

    It's really simple:

    -Ban ARs
-The only available fire arms to carry and possess at home are Shotguns, Pistols, and Marksman Rifles
-Any rifle can be shot at a range, but the range must handle, care, and store the rifles lent at the range.
-Anyone not being mentally or emotionally stable of mind, on a terrorist or no-fly list, or is a felon for a violent offense, should not get a gun.
-Only two reserve magazines per gun can be possessed at a time
-Each gun is to be ID'd and information is to be stored by government officials
-Anyone found possessing unidentified weaponry is to be questioned and subject to incarceration or fines.

Following the points stated above makes a safer community. All weapons are for hunting or point defense(point defense is short range but capable defense. Perfect for defending a house or defending yourself in a public situation). You don't need an automatic weapon to defend yourself from 1 or two robbers.

Forgot to add this in my original post, but the problem with making guns harder to access to criminals or people who cannot get them legally, is that those people will go to the black market and buy from there. The same thing happens in UK, where people have bought guns from the black market. In order to successfully change the accessibility of guns, the government must crack down on the black market.

The problem with this is how difficult the task is. The black market is called "The Black Market" for a reason. Not only that, but while yes - there's guns on the black market, they cost a fortune. If I'm not mistaken, black market puts guns 10-100 times more expensive than standard market price. Not only that, but the anonimity of browsers such as Tor make it incredibly hard to track them.

It still does provide a threat to the legitimate market, what the government can do at the very least is attempt to turn the black market into an alternative too costly for most people that cannot legitimately get a gun.

Everyone I know who I train with that's over the age of 21 carries a gun and a knife legally. It's not idiotic, more people should get licenses to carry them, it's basically a life insurance

Just carry a taser or pepper spray, something to shock them. Not threaten their life..

I dont see the point of ending someones life over 'self-defence'...
Just carry something to shock them, maybe even learn hand to hand combat? Not a weapon that threatens someones life..

Yea I just believe guns have no place in society....and in a perfect world we wouldn't need them. Guns were created with the sole purpose of hurting others creatures, humans or animals and thats that on that.
Also yea I get that at least in America, it's everyone's constitutional right to bear arms, however that was created a long long time ago when the only guns that were around were muskets that took a long time to even fire one shot , and couldn't inflict mass damage. I just don't think anyone needs a gun to be honest, being around anyone with a gun is an uncomfortable feeling and I think there are other ways to defend yourself that are more humane than having a gun.
