Necro-posting is blindly frowned upon by many users, and all threads which are necro'd, no matter how harmless (like Count with pictures) are closed. But it's not even listed in the rules or anything. So I ask you guys (particularly staff) this: Why do you guys still say "Don't bump" and stuff when it's not listed as a rule and is (except for threads about old/outdated problems) harmless? It doesn't make sense, and to me it's just illogical. Spoiler: Honest opinion. Don't click if you're easily offended. If you're going to make a post on this at least make it useful... Okay, here goes. Yeah, I get what you mean. And don't get me wrong, reviving things like old forum games is harmless. However, do you know what a forum is? It's intended for online discussion and online discussion alone. Realistically, if you're going to be discussing something, you should be discussing things that are recent and are popular to discuss on said forum. If you're just bringing up old threads, it revives a finished discussion and moves the recent and useful threads down. It's actually extremely frowned upon on most forums, J+H isn't the only one. Anyway, summary for anyone who doesn't get what I mean... Bumping old threads (if it isn't a forum game) is destructive the the ability for a forum to be a true and active forum.
No, actually I understand here. Here my view on necroing threads. Say person A asked a question in the help section and someone answers it. Time passes by, the thread becomes idle and old. Then person B comes by and has the same question. They can either : A) Make a new thread asking the same question which would result in people saying "This question has already been asked! Search things up before posting about it!!" B) Search it up and have their question answered, but they could have another question rise up about said situation and post on that thread which would then result in people saying "OMG don't bump old posts! Just make a new thread!!" See the problem? It's a lose lose situation. I say if it's appropriate and it relates to the thread, I don't have a problem with it. However, other people may say otherwise. (Props to Daorack for teaching me this)
Well see, that's an exception, but the usual internet accepted idea is that if the question was answered, there was no need to bump it. However I see you point, it's a good one, but have to agree with Yomc
Necro posting should only be allowed if it's related to the main topic somehow. That's normally my only exception but people tell others to not bump because it may prevent more useless and unnecessary bumps in the future.
Yeah I see your point. But what annoys me most is that even necro'd forum games get closed, which is why I made this thread.
I meant that yes, the question was answered but what if person B thought of another question to ask about the same topic. That's where the problem would erupt.
What we mean when we say that you should not be doing it, is that most bumpers or whatever only do it because they want more post count and don't know where else they can get it. While doing that, they usually post useless and pointless messages, just so they get the count.
Posting on old threads. I kind of agree here, but threads to talk about something (like brony threads, SAO threads, TF2 threads, you name it) and forum games most definitely shouldn't be closed when they're necro'd.
