Uhh... Shields are a part of the new PvP system.
Also, why is flying around while wearing the dragon head being a noob?

Who said the purpose of the game is to be simple?
It's a sandbox game, you're supposed to have many different abilities, if you would only have the ability to place and break blocks (It was like that in the very first version of Minecraft) no one would have interest in the game. And who cares that someone did Elytras using mods before? I don't see how that's a reason to not add something in the game. I made a hang glider concept before (Which was really easy to make, actually) but it was really just something to show to people, you wouldn't use it really. And now the Elytras are inside of the game, no need for a concept to build them, and, let's be honest, they look way better.
