    A mathematician and a student were looking at a base. 20 minutes later, the student said 12 divided by 2 =
    7, and the mathematician agreed.

    HINT: They weren't fooling around,they were serious.
    Answer:

    They were looking at bases right? 12 divided by 2 is 7 in base 12

    The Roman numeral for 12 is XII. If you transect that horizontally (cut it in half) the top portion becomes VII (7)
