Aye, JWD here. I thought I'd do some promo, or as I like to call it, shameful self-advertising. This is a book I'm currently writing on Wattpad. (Don't judge me. I want people to see my stuff.) If you want to read the rest, make sure to check my profile out @jwd813 Anyways, this is Chapter I of my newest, and personal favorite, Prove It. Enjoy c: Chapter I I pounded my fist against the cold, stone wall. It wasn't fair. I wasn't the one who blew up The Great Sky Monument. Why was I being accused for this? "Idiots.." I mumbled. Perhaps I should tell you my story. My names Ethan. 18 years old, turning 19 in a few days. No parents, no lover, no siblings, no family. I'm a lone wolf. Now, I'm a jailed lone wolf. After The Great Sky Monument was blown up, the pinned me for it. I have no idea why. I didn't even get a trial, they just jailed me. No questions asked. The Great Sky Monument was built to represent how our planet, Domum, was blessed with the gift of The Sky or something like that. I didn't really care, I had other things to worry about than how Domum was created, or whatever. I punched the wall again. "It's not fair.." I growled. "I didn't do it." Then, I heard another voice. A male, deep, and a heavy accent. "Sucks for ya. You're locked up here now. Forever." I whirled around to see a bulky man, sitting on the wooden bed. How had I missed him? He wore the same red inmate suit as I did. His matted brown hair was a greasy mess on top of his head, streaks of gray in it. His face was streaked with dirt, blood, and sweat. His eyes, well, eye (He wore an eye patch) was dark as midnight. Then again, everyone had dark eyes. Except for me. I was special in that regard. Everyone else, they're eyes were obsidian black. Mine were a pale blue. I always wondered why my eyes were different from anyone else's. I never really put too much thought into it though. "I shouldn't be here. I'm- wait, did you say forever?" I said. The man stood up. He had to be at least 6'5", and he towered over me. I was always on the shorter end, standing at only 5'8". I hated it, but sometimes it worked out well for me. "Haven't ya heard of Carcere?" He asked. "No.." I said, a quizzical look on my face. The man faced the wall and sighed. "Carcere is a prison for the worst criminals. It's eternal. Time does not flow here. We do not age. We are stuck here forever." "Wait, you're saying I'm staying here until like, the end of the universe or something?" "I guess you could say that." He stuck out a huge hand. "Name's Latro. I've been here for at least 20 years. I'm here for robbing the Magna Museum. Well, attempting to anyway. What ya in for?" I shook his hand and replied, "Nothing. Absolutely nothing." "Cmon mate, you can tell me." I let out a sigh. "I was accused of blowing up The Great Sky Monument, even though I didn't. I don't even care about that thing." "Wow, that's a biggie. Ya say ya didn't do it?" "No!" I shouted. "Like I said, I couldn't care less about it." Latro rubbed his chin, deep in thought. "Ya say ya don't care about the monument. Do ya even know what The Sky does for us?" "Nah." "The Sky protects us from all outside evil. The only way evil gets in Domum, is if someone born here chooses to be evil." "Ok.." I dropped my voice. "Would you by any chance know how to get out of here?" "Nah mate. You're stuck here." I felt all my hope slipping away. Was this really my destiny? To spend all of time in an eternal prison? "Well, there is one way..." Latro said quietly. "What is it?" I asked eagerly. "I'll do anything to get out of here." "I shouldn't even bother telling ya. It's impossible." Latro said, a frown on his face. "Tell me." I said in a tone more stern than intended. "Very well. Have ya ever heard of Potastatem?" "Pota-what?" "Po-Tas-Ta-Tem" Latro said slowly. "It's The Sky's power source. It was stolen, long ago. Without it, The Sky is fading. Soon, Domum will be exposed to any evil. Trust me, there is plenty of evil in the outside." "How do you know all this?" I asked. Latro shrugged. "I took a job as a history professor as a cover to my true job. That's not important." "Ok, so what does that have to do with anything?" "The leaders of this prison know where Potastatem was taken. However, they say to get there, ya have to take on a dangerous quest, filled with obstacles you could never imagine. Bring back Potastatem alive, and your given freedom." "What kind of quest?" "No one knows. No one has ever returned alive to tell the story. They just give ya a weapon of your choice, give ya the location, and send ya off. Ya either come back with Potastatem, or ya die trying." "How do I get to go on this quest?" "Guards come in for inspection every morning. Ya can request to take the quest, and they'll bring ya before the prison leaders. They'll give ya all the info they can." "Why can only inmates take the quest? Why can't someone from the public volunteer?" "Only the leaders of Domum, leaders of Carcere, and most inmates know that Potastatem is missing. Word travels quickly in this place ya know. The Domum leaders are afraid if word gets out to the public, it'll cause mass panic." That was kind of a stupid reason to me, but then again, I didn't know much about Domum. I was in it for myself. "Once again, how do you know all this?" I asked Latro sighed. "The inmate that was here before ya went on this quest. Like all the others, he never returned. I wanted to avenge his death. I volunteered to take the quest. They told me everything. But... Then, they told me I wasn't worthy of the quest, because of this." He tapped his eye patch. "They said only fully healthy men could take the quest. And apparently, I'm not fully healthy." "Wow. That really sucks." I said. That was total horsecrap. Latro was probably one if the strongest inmates here. "Latro?" "Ya?" "I'll take this quest. I'll do it for you." Latro gave a slight smile. But it quickly faded. "Ya won't come back alive mate." He said. "Oh, yes I will. I'll do anything to get out of here." "It's impossible. Ya'd be better off here." "I'm doing this. You can't stop me." Latro sighed again. "I suppose I can't. Very well. I give ya all my luck." I smiled, something I didn't do very often. "Thanks Latro." .:The Next Morning:. I woke up to a hideous blaring. I got up slowly, my back aching. The beds were just a wooden slab. Really uncomfortable. "Inspection time." Latro said from the other bed. A guard walked down the hall, would burst open each door, and rip through the cell like a tornado. "What should I say?" I asked Latro quietly while the guard yelled at an inmate for having his shoe untied. Yea, that's how brutal this place was. "Just say, 'I request to take the quest for Potastatem'." "Alright." I took a deep breath, and the door burst open. The guard stepped in. He was a really big man, maybe bigger than Latro. He had a crooked face, full beard, and his eyes seemed darker than normal. They radiated evil. I read the tag on his chest. Earl Custodi: Guard rank III As he began to tear through the room. I took a deep breath, and cleared my throat. "Mr. Custodi?" I said with a calm voice, somehow? "What?!" He barked. Even his voice made me want to kill something. "I request to take the quest for Potastatem."
I like how the names are believable, you know, without sounding crazy or lazy(Zorag, Bol, shiz like that) It's found way too much in science fiction. I like the story too much! The only criticism I have is how he is different with blue eyes, and how clueless he seems. Other than that, it's really good!
