I have been wanting to talk about this for a while now but I did not know how to put this in words so I am sorry if I do not make sense. So for a few months now I have seen a lot of staff members come and go. Not just on this server but on multiple servers. And a lot of times staff have resigned due to the fact that they just feel like they are spending to much time on a game or on a screen and they feel like being staff is taking over their life. How you might ask? Well I actually asked a lot of mods and helpers this question " Do you think being a staff member takes to much time out of your social life and do you feel as if you are spending more time on a screen other than outside? " And about 9/10 people responded with " Yes I do feel as if being staff is taking to much time out of my social life and I have spent more time on my screen that outside since I have become staff but that does not really matter as fare as I know that I am doing a great job as a staff member helping others. " -but that does not really matter as fare as I know that I am doing a great job as a staff member helping others. Now when I heard this sentence from most people I thought to myself is that why you think being a staff member on a game, on a server is worth more than your social life? Of course, don't get me wrong there are a lot of staff members that don't really care of mind as long as they are helping others because yes, they applied to help. I don't want to be rude here so forgive me if I do offend you but a lot of those staff members really don't have a social since they became a staff member because they are spending most of their day on a computer helping people in a game. Again, don't get me wrong I do understand that they do it because they want to help people. Another example I do want to point out is about a staff member here on J&h that resigned due to losing a loved one due to spending to much time on a game. I do not want to name him / her as I am sure most of you know who I am talking about, but that person lost a loved one due to spending to much time on a game that he / she did not have any time to spend with that loved one. And that is when I really thought about it. Is becoming a staff member really worth it? A lot of staff members who I asked have also stated that they are losing friends due to spending to much time in a game. They said they feel as it is a bug responsibility to be very active as a staff member so they spend a lot of hours in a gamer helping and doing their duty as a staff member. I know what this feels. I used to be a helper and I remember I spent about 10-15 a day on a server moderating it as a helper. And I know and realize that it did take over my life though that time I was a staff member but as most people said, I enjoyed it. But I did not realize it was taking over my social life and I was losing friends over a game. So what do you guys think? Please bring up and good points you guys might have on this subject. All I want to say is apply for staff if you would like no one is stopping you but please think about it before you do because scenarios like these might happen to you.
I never had a social life and honestly, becoming a staff member on here made my friendships better as I had time to play with them in game. I literally only played osu! and was losing touch with a lot of friends I had made over the years. I legitimately like helping, like I do it irl too. I love this position and I honestly wouldn't give it up anytime time soon. It's fun, you get to know people and you get to help players in any way you can. What people don't realise, is that although we are allowed to go play games on the server, we cannot ignore our duties. It doesn't mean, however, we have to stay in games we do not like. All in all, Staff is really fun, but only if you enjoy talking to new people, going out of your way to make sure they are helped, and you have the time to. No one likes a Staff member who comes on every few months and doesn't do anything. Sorry, but if your irl life is affecting your job then resign. Let less busier people take over (:
It honestly really depends on the type of person you are. For some people, the job really doesn't suit them and isn't right for them. We are allowed to have fun, play mini-games, etc. But, when we called to do the staff member "duties" we can't ignore. I am fine with that, because most of the time, if I am just playing a mini-game, it isn't that important for me to stay. It's quite a fun experience. You start to see the community from a better point of view. I love the position personally, as I find helping people pretty fun. But again, for some people the position isn't right for them.
I think that a lot of people want the tag and the popularity, and apply without thinking through the duties and commitment involved. Some people are able to handle it. Others are overwhelmed by the duties/irl stuff/ whatever so they choose to leave. Better that they choose to move on and let others try.
Well, I have talked about this on Sellz thread. Never been a "Help-in-a-hard-time" dude. Sure, when my friends are really fucking up at something, I may figure something out for them. But when I get the occasion, I find a little fun the fact that I am "saving" my friend. But with the constant "dude-what's-the-answer-to-this-question" or "How-the-hell-do-you-that", I Maybe annoyed and give away a "figure-it-out-yourself". If you're like me, I don't suggest you to become a helper as it's all about the "dude-what's-the-answer-to-this-question" or "How-the-hell-do-you-that". But if you like being responsible for something and being remembered as a "Super Staff Dude", you may apply for one. I'll put the "why-you-should" and "why-you-shouldn't" tables. Spoiler: Why you should You are helping people, and they appreciate that. You may grow from a regular newbie to something memorable Your opinion will be counted stronger You just can't get bored, you're constantly on guard. Spoiler: Why you shouldn't You are FORCED to help people even if their trouble is: How do I hit in Minecraft You are overwhelmed with responsibilities You have to be careful about what you say, as it may lead to a demotion/ban There are a lot of helpers already. You decide, mate.
I don't know if there still is, but during the ending months of my time as staff there was a lot of competition. If you want to be staff, you might have to be able to handle gossip machines in the staff community. Some staff might be watching you closely to find flaws to get your demoted. I remember when there was talk that I was inactive because I am from the other side of the world. I was ignored quite a lot and I felt my work was not recognised. Undoubtedly, you will find yourself disappointed and criticised a lot. Just shining the negatives as a warning.
Wow, I never knew that there was competition for a promotion... Others talking behind your back trying to find any minor errors you might make to get you demoted to get that person a higher chance at promotion? Wow now there is another reason why I would ask myself if staff is worth it.
Yw. Just hearing "JH Staff" makes me cringe so much I might as well be a fish. EDIT: I just realised sharks are fish and have teeth..even more than we do.
Doesn't really affect my social life... It's just a different way to play the game for me, that's it.
I feel like people are seeing being staff as a little thing, well I've heard that it is almost a job which takes tons of your time. I never want to become staff, since I want to keep my social life. Of course, I love helping people and I can do that without a tag.
This "no social life" stuff is false.. for me anyways. I go over to friends houses, they come here, I talk to them irl and online, all this while being a Helper.
And then there are people like you who seem to know how to manage your times. That's another thing. I think it is still good to become a helper as long as you put a "Schedule" on your hands and manage the time your on and off the screen. Well, I can see that it being a fun expierience can be good for a while but as time passes you seem to get bored of doing the same thing over and over and over again.
I personally think that you should do what you want but make sure you know what you're doing. If you know that you're currently having problems and don't have the time I'd say that you shouldn't apply for staff. Chances are if you get accepted, you're just going receive more problems one way or another and you'll be stressed to work unless you're fine with the community constantly complaining and hating on you and eventually get demoted due to inactivity. In other words, in the long run, you'll make your life worse. However, if you really are dedicated to helping the server and want to help even more, go apply for staff. All you really need to take note of is that everything has a downside; you must be willing to make sacrifices and before you do these, think of how it will affect you and the people around you.
I personally do not have much of a social life but that doesn't bother me. If I was to go out with friends then I would, you should never feel forced to spend hours each day on the server. Staff is a voluntary job, if there's times when you cannot get on, you can notify us.. no problem. Applying as said above is entirely up to you, if you feel you would like to help and bring something to the team then go ahead. Lastly it isn't a competition. Even as staff to progress though the ranks. There will never be seperate jobs for every single person, so things will overlap.
It's too person to person, as some people have issues irl or thinks Minecraft is boring, then you don't, but if you enjoy helping or playing games then go at it, even though it's hard to become accepted, but you should try out being staff on other community's that is big, to feel how it is, that's what I did, was mod on a big community and it felt easy for me, but it is to the person himself/herself
Today is my 1 month anniversary of being a staff member, and actually, I haven't seen any differences in my social life. My life hasn't changed. I come home from school, I do my homework, and afterwards I do my Helper duties on the server. Nothing has changed. Actually, being a staff member is quiet fun and not that easy at the same time. It takes some time to know everything and even I, after 1 month of being a Helper, I still need help, and I still need to learn a lot of stuff. So to answer your question; I see no change in my social life, and being a Helper is pretty much worth it.
I personally believe that being a staff member isn't a waste of time. If someone was going to apply for a staff spot, it must mean that the person applying wants to help this community all the time. If someone would just apply so they could become popular, just leave. Yes, it does take your time away from doing other things you would normally do but you will understand why. You wouldn't have that much play time on the server. You will always keep your eye out to see if anyone needs help. You need to create yourself an image that says how trustworthy and responsible you are. I know it might suck that you won't have so much time to relax and chill out with your friends but, you have to deal with it. There are negatives and positives to becoming a staff member but, I believe that being a staff member is totally worth it. Being staff is only for those who take most of their time helping the community, sticking together with the rest of the staff team, and being there for others.
