The only way they can get your IP is through third-party programs(or you give them your IP). To be safe just don't skype with random kids, and only skype with people you know.

Hell, that's probably enough to get him arrested. :)

While DDosing is illegal, unless you do it on a very wide scale, you won't get arrested for it. It's kinda like speeding - you'll get fined, and it'll go on your record, but you won't go to jail.
The exception is when DDosing causes expensive or irreparable damage to a large corporation.
DDosing Mojang gets you arrested for cyber terrorism.
DDosing a Minecraft player, on the other hand, gets you a fine, more likely than not.

Still should report him anyways, no?

K, fine, I was wrong, it's only enough to get him fined. Woo hoo. Doesn't mean you shouldn't report him to the authorities. Fine him, and maybe even put him under surveillance to make sure he doesn't do it again.

In the US, denial-of-service attacks may be considered a federal crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act with penalties that include years of imprisonment.[47] Many[which?] other countries have similar laws.

    Ok, I did some research.

The DDoS'ing soft-ware is called Low Orbital Ion Cannon, or LOIC for short. All of them give you a Trojan Horse, but the program itself is standard Dos'ing equipment.

A few weeks ago, you couldn't do jack-shit about getting Dos'ed. They typed your skype name on a website and it gave them your IP. The site was consequently taken down.

I am unsure how it works now, but I can assure you: Follow @ohaitrans's steps, you will be safe from the threat.

I will be doing more research.

It also isn't taken seriously often. Consider jaywalking, for instance. Do it in Philadelphia, and they'll fine you. Do it in NYC, literally in front of a police car, and they won't care.
Reporting an instance like a ddos to your local authorities won't do much because the person likely doesn't live locally. Not only that, but since it's a small case, they likely won't even take action.
Look, cyber warfare isn't something that people should take lightly (and if a cyber war DID happen in the world, the results would be catastrophic).
But all I'm saying is that reporting it to the police is kinda pointless.
    That include years of imprisonment.
Not limited to years of imprisonment.
Incarceration would be reserved for DDosing on a wide scale, not a small Internet attack.

I didn't say local authorities, now did I?

Point is, it can't hurt, and it may bear gifts for all we know. So, why not?

The only gifts it really could bear, if anything, is a kid getting fined.
But... One can certainly try. I never ruled out that possibility... All I'm trying to say is that they won't get arrested :P

Then yours and my 2 last replies should have never been said, as they are pointless, seeing as I already said that he could get fined, if not arrested.
