Alright, I'm going to be doing reviews about anime more often, because anime reviews are cool. And yes, from the title, I have quite a lot of things to say about my first anime. Alright, I'm sorry if you guys hate me for this, but... YOMC REVIEW TIME Anyone who's watched Sword Art Online before can remember this line. "Link, Start!" It's the line that started off one of the most popular animes in existence. Sword Art Online won a lot - and I mean a lot - of awards. There are a lot of things to say about it. The plot seems simple enough. A boy named Kitty Toe (oh, I'm sorry, Kirito) goes into a virtual reality MMORPG, only to find that you can't log out, and if you die in the game, you die in real life. Also, the only way to get out is to beat all 100 massive levels. Some people praise Sword Art Online for its "innovative plot". I'll admit, as an avid gamer myself, I fell in love with the plot. And then I realized that it's an anime version of the Matrix. You have Kirito, the freaking OP god, trying to save the players from the game, just like in the Matrix. It's the Matrix, nothing more. And it isn't the first one, either. Anyone remember that Spy Kids series? Remember the third movie, where they go into (you guessed it) a video game? Same thing. The idea isn't original. Let me just get that out there. The characters? Kirito, a lonely child who's determined to get through the game. We all know what's going to happen here: Mr. Emotionless is going to find some sort of source of happiness. Predictable. We can also tell that he's the stupidly OP main character. Simple as that. Asuna, a girl who conveniently lives close to Kirito. Well then. She's also kinda oversexualized if I'll be honest, intended as a jerk-off for the guys watching the show. Another review alerted me to a fact that I missed: one of her in game skills is COOKING. That's really dumb. Oh yeah, and spoiler alert, we'll count Kirito's sister, who also happens to be a total whore in game. Ew. Don't even get me started on that. Oh yeah, and the FIFTEEN GIRLS THAT KIRITO MEETS ON THE WAY. Seriously, all the ladies seem to love Kirito, including a girl who's stupidly young, a blacksmith girl, and many more in the second series. It seems as if the series loves having Kirito be constantly surrounded by people of the opposite sex. Let's take a quick rant break and talk about the animation. The animation is outstanding, and the show really comes to life. As Kirito fights of massive dragons and people with lettuce hair, you can't help but applaud the amazing art and animation. Sword Art Online indeed. Okay, back to the plot. It's really predictable. Kirito kills everything in his path, then obviously falls in love with Asuna. He gets married in game, stuff happens, then eventually he finds himself finding the final boss early. And he's SUPPOSED TO DIE, but he and Asuna get saved because they sacrificed their lives for each other. That's dumb. It really is. The second part of the series was painful to rewatch. Fairies? Who thought this was a good idea? Anyone? His sister comes in as a character, but another spoiler alert here... I had to keep telling myself "It's his cousin." But it didn't make the incest any easier. Was that REALLY necessary, SAO? Episode 24 is an episode that a lot of Beaters (and yes, that's what the fanbase calls themselves) like to talk about, because it's the episode where Asuna nearly gets raped. Nearly. Guess what? In the light novel, it happens. Legit. Instead, the anime dances around the topic. (Yes, I learned this by watching another review) I hate the way the anime did that. There are some animes where people get raped, and the anime handles it accordingly. If you're going to hint at it, then put it in there. If not, then stop. It really did end up irritating me. Overall, I don't know what else to say. The plotline was unoriginal and predictable (then again, so is this review, in a way). The characters were meh, and the show spent more time surrounding Kirito with girls. Everything, including the action and the romance... You can see it coming. The art is amazing... But it's the show's only strong point. If you've watched other variations of anime, you'll likely agree with what I mean. If SAO is your only one, you likely won't see it. And that's because SAO is a poorly watered down version of other anime. It's a great starter anime, I'll admit that. When people ask me to show them an anime, I won't show them Mirai Nikki, Hell Girl, or Death Note; I'll show them SAO, because it's friendly to new Otakus and such. Heck, I even memorized the theme song. Word for word. And a few people here have heard me sing it, too. But if you rewatch it, you'll see that it's flawed. It has plot holes. Yui is just ONE of the major plot holes in the anime. It's great for its art and its animation. It can be used to introduce people to anime. But if .hack didn't exist, people would neither know nor care about this anime. 4/10, at best. It's below average... And just not a very fulfilling show. And yes, this is the honest opinion of someone who used to love Sword Art Online with a passion. /rant end
I think that can be your answer. I'll probably do Dangan Ronpa next, being that Spicy has something planned for it...
1. None of those are Asuna 2. YEY 3. Also to add all the girls/Klein wanted to get in Kirito'spants HOW COULD YOU LEAVE OUT THE BROMANCE HOW? ;n;
One of my least favorite ships in existence but if I don't post this Goobs won't stop XD GOOBS ARE YOU HAPPY NOW YOU BETTER BE
@The_Demonstar01 c: Anyways, I wish I watched SAO so I can either join or oppose your thoughts on this.
Oh goddammit I knew you'd do this. :P Ignore Peter, he's being a silly baka. Seriously though, I would not be against Dangan Ronpa. Maybe I can contribute a bit.
I can just imagine the creators walking around in a room with a whiteboard "Hmm... well, who can we put Kirito with now? 5 crushes no a few more NO ADD MORE ADD HIS SISTER!!!"
Agree. Kirito's sister......that was unnecessary. And I'm just going to point out what I bet all of you have either A) Thought about but didn't have the guts to say, or B) Didn't even think about. The women in this show are the most stereotypical chaaracter's I've ever seen. It bothers me so much, I almost stopped watching it for that sole purpose. But I didn't because I would never get over myself for not finishing what you started. That can be taken as a metaphor, or in a literal sense, whichever you prefer. Back to the women, NOBODY, AND I MEAN NO. BODY. NOT EVEN MODELS ARE THAT PERFECT. N0t all women are perfect and skinny but simutaneously have, sorry, huge jugs. It's not physically possible. I did not see one chubby girl in this show. Let's be honest, gamer girls. We're not model skinny. But we're still sexy beasts To summarize, one of the main flaws of that show were the characters. Completley unrealistic. That's all I have to say, heh. -~Peeta.
I was planning on saying that the girls in the show were unrealistic. Then, I thought back a bit and realized that most girls from most anime are similar. Of course, the girls in SAO were still way too oversexualized anyway. Even looking besides Asuna, who we already know to be sexualized way too much, the blacksmith girl of who me I forget the name has a suggestive scene, Silica has a brief scene in her underwear, the leader of the leaf peeps has tits that are FREAKING FLOPPING EVERYWHERE... You bring up a really major point there. I'll go over it another time, but I'll say now, one of the reasons that I really like Soul Eater and Dangan Ronpa is that the female protagonists aren't sexualized in any way. I liked that aspect.
SAO has elements of TRON too With the females, maybe they were going off that "fake gamer girl" stereotype, where girls who play games want it easy, so they use the idea, that if they act cute or sexy, the male gamers would help or give things to them. (A tactic I don't see here, fortunately) Or Aniplex really wanted to make a harem show, badly or interestingly executive, however you look at it
That's the thing. There is not a single unattractive looking female in the entire anime. Really makes it look realistic, eh? Yeah, I think they were going for a harem type here.
Hunter x Hunter is love Hunter x Hunter is life Hunter x Hunter is cool Hunter x Hunter you must watch And Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is the greatest anime you will ever find(one of the more serious ones, with a great plot ;D)
