gamechap video says that Paying money for virtual items is illegal

So i just got done recently watching a video from gamechap and theirs a video posted by them that mojang said servers that have a thing where you pay for virtual items like perks items ranks etc actually violates the terms of service for minecraft. Saying that it is officially illegal to make money off of selling stuff from the game. So does that mean our ranks and perks are going away? D: oh god no.

 

This cannot be taken in affect. There are so many Minecraft servers with perks it would take years to take them down, but they would barely make a dent. Also, NO ONE LISTENS TO TERMS OF SERVICE. I never read any of them.

 

It's kind of different.

You don't sell them, it's like a fundraiser for money to support the server.

 

Hypixel's server has so much income the highest staff get paid wages. I THINK that is true. But they usually get 10K per day

 

Lets explain :D

Basically, what they mean is that if you take part of the game, for say a diamond sword and make it a perk for "donating" it violates the Terms of Service. This is because you payed for an account to play the game, therefore you are entitled for the FULL game. They say that making you pay extra for the diamond sword is what violates the ToS as you should be entitled to that diamond sword for free as you payed for the full game.

Now on most servers, the ranks consist of donation perks such as /hat, /pet, /effects. These use the mechanics and Minecraft elements, but the feature of using particles as fancy player effects is not part of the game that Mojang intended. You didn't pay for fancy effects when buying a Minecraft account. This is coded by a 3rd party mod/plugin, therefore selling this is not violating the ToS as Mojang didn't make that feature.

Either way, Mojang cant control what you sell as "donation perks" on your server. So you will NOT loose your rank.

And I quote "donating" as you're not "donating". Donating to a server is giving money with nothing in return. Purchasing is where you receive something. So you're actually "purchasing" ranks. Either way its okay as the money is used to fund the server.

 

Ah i get it now, but what about buying diamonds off the buycraft store? Doesnt that count as a violation of the tos?

 

Technically, yes. But as I said, Mojang can't do anything about it. No one really cares anyway. DIAMONDS :D

 

They said that theyre gonna update the tos, so could that also mean that IJAH is gonna get shut down by mojang or their host

 

They can update the ToS, but they can't shut down a server or prevent them from selling these things. No servers will get shut down to what I assume.

You can still get diamonds the normal way though... but you can donate for extras if you would like.

Well back to the topic does that mean server host are illegal? Because it is selling the server and a part of the game for money?

 

Ok listen up guys.

This is not illegal to do. The people who are donating to servers are technically donating ONLY to help out the server. So it is NOT a purchase. Servers say that as a little "bonus" for donating and you get something such as a rank, diamond sword, what ever. This makes it not illegal to do. Besides that as presedentbacon said, most of the things your donating for are technically not part of the minecraft game itself like /hat and /fly so for that reason it makes this NOT illegal.

 

I can't seem to find the exact tweets, but Mojang employee Marc stated that almost everything bought with Buycraft violates the Minecraft ToS.

Mojang's a good company and they take good care of their community, I highly doubt they would start taking any sort of legal actions against Buycraft. It's just there for their own protection, for when they do need it.

Well Mojang has said that selling ranks on a server violates the tos and we also sell creeper eggs which is part of the game and spawners. Also the "almost" is for servers that you donate and get nothing. But most servers don't have this as it never gets used.
